Forbidden Music Workshop series April 9th – May 14th 2025

Welcome to the workshop series of the forbidden music project. We will have 5 meetings to get to know more about forbidden music, instrument making and design and to, together, build a hybrid musical instrument. Each workshops will be divided into different moments: an lecture introduction of a topic, a discussion time, a music jam time and a collaborative instrument building time. Depending o nthe workshops each of these moments will be longer or shorter. In the final workshops we will be more focused on the building of a collective instrument. Hence, if you want to join, it is important to be present in all (or most) of the workshops.

About building instruments: We will go through the basics of instrument making and sound transmission in physical objects. The group will be facilitaded by a professional instrument maker and design researcher (Nicholas B. Torretta). We encourage you to take part of building and using machines according to your level of experience. There will be an optional safety introduction to the big machines in the K3 woodworkshop (drill press, band saw, mitter saw, cross cutting saw and plainer) if you want to learn how to use them and be able to use them during the workshop process. However, while the machines are safe overall, using them is at your own risk and we reccomend that you have a home insurance that covers accidents in order to use these bigger machines. Nevertheless, if you don´t have woodworking skills, and do not want to take the introductory course, but still want to be part of the workshop series you are very welcome and we will find ways that everyone can participate according to their interests and skill levels.

When: The workshops happens weekly on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 16:00 and take place at Malmö Unversity’s workshop at Orkanen building (Nordenskiöldsgatan 10, Malmö) at room OR:B132.
